Heather Winterling Ota is an American visual artist based in London and Seattle. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting and Drawing from Syracuse University in 1984 and her Master of Arts in Painting at the Royal College of Art in 2026.

Ota's practice examines the complex interplay of memory, space, and the emotional experience of being dismissed, silenced, and controlled. Working through an intuitive, gestural process, Ota gives form to the tension, resistance, and trauma held within the body, privileging embodied sensation over specific events or linear narratives.

Her layered compositions occupy an indeterminate space between figuration and abstraction. Forms surface, fracture, dissolve, and resist resolution, creating shifting psychological landscapes in which recognition is continually destabilised. Through this ambiguity, Ota explores the unseen structures of human conditioning and the ways memory and emotion influence, distort, and reconstruct our perception of reality.

Rather than illustrating trauma, Ota’s paintings evoke its residue—what persists in the body, in memory, and in the spaces between what is experienced and what can be articulated. Her practice considers painting as a site of negotiation: between presence and absence, control and resistance, memory and invention.
